CLEAN-UP DAY AT MAGALUF BEACH

The Association Chelonia together with Mares Circulares of Coca-Cola participates in a cleaning and awareness raising day on the Calvià coast

The Chelonia Association together with Mares Circulares of Coca-Cola and the collaboration of Calvià Town Hall's Natural and Urban Environment Department, has carried out today Saturday, 13th October, an awareness raising and coastline clean-up day on the Calvià coast, specifically on the Magaluf beach.

In this action, about 40.4 kilos of waste have been collected, of which 33.7 kg correspond to rubbish, 2 kg to glass, 100 g to paper, 1.1 kg to Pet containers and 3.5 kg to plastic. The cleaning action has been carried out thanks to the participation of a group of volunteers, Calvià 2000, the Natural and Urban Environment Service and the Chelonia Association together with Mares Circulares of Coca-Cola, an initiative born from a project to clean up our beaches and oceans, as well as to promote recycling and boost circular economy.

The objective of this initiative is not only to clean this beach located in an urban area, but also to raise awareness of both the environment that surrounds us and the problems that arise from anthropic remains such as cigarette butts and other waste, especially the microplastics, amongst the participants.

The Calvià Town Hall's Natural and Urban Environment Department has planned several actions where awareness raising and beach clean-ups are combined, a way to better understand the operation of the coast and the consequences of not respecting the natural environment. The next cleaning action will take place on Sunday 21
st October at El Toro beach, where in addition to cleaning the coastline, Palma Aquarium will hold two workshops: one of them will consist in a marine fauna rescue simulation, and another in which participants can discover the invertebrates that inhabit the Mediterranean. And together with Mares Circulares of Coca-Cola, two more actions have been scheduled in different points of the municipality.
