CALVIÀ REGAINS THE CONDITION OF MUNICIPALITY OF MORE THAN 50,000 INHABITANTS
The INE confirms the data that will be taken into account for the purposes of the Local Regime Law
Calvià regains the condition of municipality of more than 50,000 inhabitants after the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported that the population figure as of 1st January 2019 is 50,509 inhabitants. Calvià did not exceed 50,000 inhabitants since 2016.
The INE's confirmation has a special importance since it will be the figure that will be taken into account in the application of the Local Regime Law, for the purpose of receiving subsidies, etc., since the number of inhabitants is taken into account at the moment the consistory is constituted.
This condition of municipality of more than 50,000 inhabitants does not affect, however, the number of councillors -which will go from 25 to 21-, since, in this case, the Electoral Law establishes 1st January 2018 as the reference date. At that date, the INE acknowledges a population of 49,333 inhabitants.
