THE NEW URBAN GARDEN IN SON FERRER NOW OPERATES WITH THE KEY HANDOVER TO THE 16 PLOT USERS
Calvià Town Hall has also granted 7 vacant plots of the Son Bugadelles orchard
Calvià Town Hall has handed over the keys to the 23 new beneficiaries of the urban gardens of the municipality, who can enjoy their use for 4 years.
The deputy mayor for Environment, Rafel Sedano, and the councillor for Environment, Marga Plomer, have handed over the keys, together with the councillor of the area of Son Ferrer, Alfonso Molina, to who will be the first users of Son Ferrer's urban garden, opened this year. The Son Ferrer orchard consists of 16 plots of 50 m2 that have an irrigation system, electricity, lockers, bathrooms and a pruning waste collection area. The 7 plots that were vacant in Son Bugadelles, where there is an urban garden in operation since 2014, have also been awarded.
The Calvià urban gardens are conceived as dynamisation spaces in which users invest their leisure time in an eco-sustainable way. In addition to producing food for own consumption, these spaces have a social, integrative, educational, participatory and environmental leisure purpose, with the aim of creating places of citizen participation that contribute to the improvement of people's life quality, the social integration and the promotion of citizen collaboration in environmental improvement activities.
The urban gardens' regulation establishes that the spaces must be managed according to the principles of organic farming. In this sense, the Associació Producció Agrària Ecològica Mallorca (APAEMA), with the collaboration of the Town Hall and the Regional Ministry for Environment and Territory, has organised for October free workshops to offer tools and knowledge on the management of family gardens in Agroecology, to the Calvià urban gardens' users and to the people of the municipality interested in the subject.
The plots are intended, preferably, for retired people and long-term unemployed people, but non-profit entities and the general population may also opt for them. The person or holder must pay a 60 euro annual fee for the private use of the plot.
