Calvią Tourism Forum Meeting

Monday 28th October 2019

CALVIÀ TOURISM FORUM

The constitution of the"Nightlife destinations" work commission has been proposed at the meeting

The Calvià Tourism Forum, chaired by Mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, met today and was attended by the Regional Minister of Economic Model, Tourism and Labour, Iago Negueruela, who explained the measures to boost tourism after the Thomas Cook crisis

Another issue discussed during the meeting has been the proposal to set up the "Nightlife Destinations" work table, a work group that will deal with aspects related to the tourist season, the study of possible changes and improvements in municipal ordinances, the study of actions within the scope of the Activities Committee, as well as other issues such as maintenance, cleaning, safety, etc.

The proposal that has been made is that the "Nightlife Destinations" table is made up of: municipal departments involved (Activities, Calvià 2000, Maintenance, Tourism), hotel association representatives, representatives of the tourist trade and catering, night leisure representatives, representatives of the taxi sector, local police and Civil Guard and a person representing each political group with representation in the municipal plenary.

In this sense, both the mayor and the regional minister have indicated, in statements prior to the meeting, that both administrations, Regional Government and Town Hall, continue to work to control the aggressive supply of alcohol, as the main cause of drunkenness tourism.

The mayor has also reported the estimate of public investments in urban settings.

Thus, the first phase of the renovation works of Palmira beach promenade in Peguera, the renovation of Nadala square in Palmanova, the improvement of Martín Ros Garcia and Torrenova streets in Magaluf, the construction of Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Museum and the works to turn the main street of Calvià into a semi-pedestrian area with the revitalisation of local commerce to make it a tourist attraction throughout the year, will begin this winter.

Works are planned to be carried out in two phases, in two years, such as the renewal of the Puig des Teix in Santa Ponça and the renewal of París and Germans Pinzons streets in Palmanova. Likewise, works are planned for the consolidation of the walls on the coast of Sa Caleta in Portals, and work is being done on the drafting of two important projects: the connection, with the Calvià promenade, of El Toro with Santa Ponça, and the comprehensive renewal of the sea front in Magaluf. The mayor has also reported two actions that are already underway such as the recovery of the hydraulic system of the Galatzó Estate and the rehabilitation of the pigsties' building of the estate to turn it into a shelter of the dry stone route, action which will be carried out by the Consell de Mallorca.

The Calvià Tourism Forum, created in 2016, is constituted as a space for debate, dialogue and collaboration between all the agents directly linked to the tourist activity that takes place in the municipality of Calvià. Its main functions revolve around the analysis of issues directly related to the tourist activity that takes place in the municipality of Calvià and the issuance of reports and recommendations on this subject with a purely consultative and non-binding nature.

The Forum is made up of: the mayor and councillors involved in tourism matters, the general director of Tourism of Calvià, the political groups with municipal representation in Calvià, the Chamber of Commerce, Fomento del Turismo, Fundación Calvià 2004, the hotel associations of the municipality, federations and business groups (commerce, catering, complementary offer, leisure and services), UGT and CCOO (unions with majority representation in the municipality), the UIB, neighborhood representatives of the areas of greatest tourist activity and consumer organisations, amongst others.
