Mayor's edict before Covid de-escalation

Wednesday 10th March 2021

MAYOR OF CALVIÀ EDICT BEFORE COVID19 DE-ESCALATION

MAYOR'S OFFICE EDICT

CALVIÀ TOWN HALL'S MAYOR-PRESIDENT STATES THAT:

We are managing to control COVID19 pandemic's third wave. Data gives us that joy and vaccines give us the hope to see the end of this bad dream. But we know that tens of thousands of people have died in our country and hundreds of them in our Community.

Controlling the waves of this pandemic has forced us to make decisions that limited our mobility and the activity of many of our companies. The year 2020 ended with an unfortunately historic drop in our tourism activity of up to 85% at the "best" time of the season, if there was any good one.

The damage that this pandemic has done to the economy of so many Calvià families is evident. And we have been with them, by multiplying the aid and subsidies, and also for the entire productive fabric.

Now we are close to being able to control it completely. The horizon of a vaccination that we all want to accelerate, as the arrival of more vaccines increases, gives us hope. The tourist season, and with it the reactivation of our economy, is closer, and we must manage to reach it with very low contagion rates, with what we call "cumulative incidence at 14 days" below 50, and if it is possible below 25. With these virus incidence levels, we will save lives, we will recover the economy and with it, the activity and work that thousands of Calvià residents wish and need.

We cannot allow putting it at risk with a new wave, a fourth wave that will bring back deaths of our loved ones, full ICUs, saturation of the health system, and a new slow-down on the opening of our tourist and services economy.

These days we share the logical desires to recover our social relationships, the activity of terraces and restaurants, the visits of friends and family ... But we must not jump into them without the necessary measures, or the due precaution that we all already know: surgical masks, open spaces, social distance ... The virus is still here, amongst us, and we cannot allow it to expand with accelerated and uncontrolled social contact. If we do so, its incidence will grow again, and with it, the enormous consequences for our public health and our economic activity. Let's not allow it.

For all those reasons, I call on all Calvià residents to individual and collective responsibility for a controlled and leisurely recovery of our social activity, as an absolutely necessary step to avoid new pandemic waves and thus achieve the long-awaited economic recovery with the summer and autumn tourist season, and make the pain for the death of family or friends, or their suffering, disappear little by little until making this COVID19 a controlled bad dream, which we must never forget.

IT IS MADE PUBLIC FOR GENERAL KNOWLEDGE IN CALVIÀ, ON 10th MARCH 2021.

MAYOR
Alfonso Rodríguez Badal
