 Friday 16th February 2018

The total waste collected by Calvià 2000 reaches 60,000 tonnes in 2017, 4% more than in 2016

The selective collection represents 24% of the municipal waste.

The fraction that grows the most is organic matter in hotels (+ 23%)

The waste generated in the municipality of Calvià throughout the year 2017 has followed a growing trend, with 4% compared to the previous year, after the public company Calvià 2000 collected almost 60,000 tons. Of this total, the selective collection in Calvià represents 24%, a percentage that has grown by 0.8% in relation to 2016.

Specifically, 1,101.84 tons of selective waste have been accounted for, a fraction of which 14,345 tonnes have been collected and which includes glass, packaging, cardboard, organic in hotels, branches, waste of the Deixalleria and junk, clothing and oil.

The majority of selective fractions have experienced a significant growth. The one that has grown the most in 2017, with 23%, has been the organic in hotels, reaching 2,990 tons; followed by glass (9% increase and 3,377 tonnes), cardboard (6% increase and 2,844 tonnes), light packaging (6% and 1,173 tonnes) and branches and pruning waste (5%, 1,229). Thus repeating the same behaviour of the preceding exercise.

Of the glass collected, 33% corresponds to hotels and 22% to the complementary offer, while the rest is glass collected on public roads. These percentages are very similar to the distribution of the cardboard, of which 30% is collected in hotels and 20% in the complementary offer. The cardboard collected in P Points has grown by 19%, over the collected on public roads and hotels.

On their part, the collected junk and other objects left in the Deixalleria have reached 2,644 tons, representing a decrease of 2%. Faced with this downward trend, the Deixalleria, green point located in the Son Bugadelles industrial estate, has experienced a rise in the number of daily entries, from 19 to 24, with an annual total of 8,679, compared to 6,842 entries from the previous year.

The evolution of the selective collection in Calvià, according to the president of Calvià 2000, Andreu Serra, should be gradually increasing, so he makes a call to the residents of Calvià to improve the separation at home and properly pour this waste into their corresponding containers, as well as make use of the Deixalleria for everything that can not be left in the container.
