 Tuesday 12th June 2018

22 KG OF WASTE COLLECTED IN A CLEAN-UP DAY ON THE BEACH OF PORTALS VELLS

The action is part of the European campaign 'Let's Clean Up Europe' which also aims to raise awareness on the microplastics problem

The Calvià Town Hall, through the Natural and Urban Environment Service, has carried out, with the participation of the Ondine association, an awareness raising and clean-up day on the beach of Portals Vells, within the framework of the European campaign 'Let's Clean Up Europe '. A total 22 kg of waste have been collected, of which 16 kg are glass.

The objective of this initiative is, in addition to cleaning this cove located in a non-urban area, to make the participants aware of the problem that microplastics pose in the natural environment. The 22 kg collected, correspond to1,182 objects of different materials: 882 pieces of plastic, 60 pieces of glass and 200 sanitary waste materials, amongst others.

The cleaning action has been carried out thanks to the participation of Ondine volunteers, beach users and environmental staff. Calvià 2000 has also collaborated in the clean-up day with the waste removal.

The Calvià Town Hall has planned several actions where awareness raising is combined with sand cleaning, a way to better understand the operation of the coastline and the consequences of not respecting the natural environment.
