Boosting recycling at the Mallorca Open

 Wednesday 13th June 2018

THE CALVIÀ TOWN HALL, MALLORCA OPEN AND ECOVIDRIO FILL CALVIÀ WITH TENNIS BALL-SHAPED CONTAINERS

-Within the Mallorca Open celebration, 18 giant tennis ball-shaped containers will be placed in Palma and Calvià

-In addition, the winners' trophies, both doubles and singles, will be made of recycled glass

Ecovidrio, the non-profit organisation responsible for managing the recycling of glass waste in Spain, in collaboration with the Calvià Town Hall and the Mallorca Open organisation, have placed, numerous giant tennis ball-shaped containers in some of the most symbolic points of Calvià, on the occasion of the celebration of the III Edition of the Mallorca Open tournament. In addition, a similar number of containers will be placed in Palma.

This morning Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, mayor of Calvià; Andreu Serra, president of Calvià 2000; Carla Suárez, professional tennis player and tournament participant; and Borja Martiarena, Ecovidrio Marketing director, presented the containers located in Palmanova, which thanks to the agreement signed between all entities, they promote the recycling of glass amongst all tennis amateurs and visitors and residents of both locations.

The Mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez, stressed: "We are very happy because in such an important international tournament, sustainability criteria are taken into account, such as promoting the glass recycling which is a milestone in our municipality. Calvià doubles the island average of recycling of this type of packaging in Mallorca".

The initiative has been launched because, in the words of Borja Martiarena, "it is a luxury to be able to convince tennis amateurs of the need to recycle glass containers, in an event such as the Mallorca Open and in an environment such as the municipality of Calvià and Palma ".

In addition, in order to reinforce this sustainability message, the finalists and winners' trophies of the doubles and singles categories will be made with recycled glass. Ecovidrio will also carry out other actions within the framework of the celebration of this tournament, such as the presence of the tennis courts' static advertsing entity.

Recycling data in Calvià

Calvià residents recycled 3,344 tons of glass waste through the green container during 2017, which means about 68kg of glass per inhabitant, equivalent to 259 containers.

With the aim of facilitating citizen collaboration, the container park has increased to 471 units. Thus, the containerisation ratio is one container per 104 Calvià residents.

Thanks to the glass deposited in the containers, the Calvià residents managed to avoid the emission of tons of CO2 equivalent to planting 2,200 trees. In addition, they have managed to save 7,429 MWh of energy, the same amount as the domestic electricity consumption of the city of Barcelona in a day.

20 years recycling glass containers

After the Packaging and Packaging Waste Law's approval in 1997 and the start of operations in 1998, Ecovidrio became the managing entity of a recycling model that guarantees a public, universal and complete service. The recycling of glass containers is a fundamental element to contribute to sustainable development according to the principles of circular economy.

During the last two decades, the recycling rate of glass containers has experienced an exponential growth going from 31.3% in 2000 to 72% in 2016, a rate estimated by Ecovidrio according to the current calculation method. The work of Ecovidrio stands out for guaranteeing high-quality recycling through the container, enhancing containerisation and collection infrastructures, investing in plans and resources aimed at increasing the recycling of glass containers in the hotel trade, encouraging citizens through awareness campaigns and promote the prevention and eco-design of packaging.

Ecovidrio is the non-profit organisation in charge of the management of the recycling of glass waste in Spain. 8,000 packaging companies, with their contribution through the green point, make the recycling system possible.
