Calvią: moving towards Zero Waste

 Thursday 14th June 2018

THE SANTA PONÇA TREATMENT PLANT WILL REGENERATE A LARGE PART OF CALVIÀ WASTEWATER FOR IRRIGATION AND OTHER URBAN USES

Calvià 2000 has already put out on tender the construction works of the new tertiary equipment, within its Zero Waste strategic objective

Calvià will have the most advanced tertiary water treatment system in the Islands in terms of capacity and quality

The works will begin in the last quarter of this year and will involve an investment of more than 5.5 million euros

Calvià 2000 is developing an ambitious plan for the water regeneration and reuse throughout the municipality to promote the use of regenerated water to replace the use of water for human consumption in irrigation and urban uses. With this objective, the works for the construction of the tertiary treatment facilities at the Santa Ponça wastewater treatment plant have just been put out on tender, with which Calvià will have the most advanced tertiary water treatment system in the Islands in terms of capacity and quality.

The Santa Ponça wastewater treatment plant is the largest of the four wastewater treatment plants in the municipality of Calvià. It has a potential secondary treatment or purification capacity of up to 40,000 m3/day, in which an adequate quality effluent is generated for the output conditions.

The importance of this initiative lies in the contribution of the municipal public company to the Town Hall's environmental sustainability and circular economy strategy, since, once the new facilities are underway, most of the municipal wastewater can be regenerated and used for urban uses (private gardens irrigation, sanitary devices discharge, urban green areas irrigation, street cleaning) and agricultural uses (irrigation of golf courses), achieving the Zero Waste strategic objective.

At present, only the Bendinat treatment plant has a tertiary treatment system, in which 1,000 m3 / day of water are regenerated, used to irrigate the public green areas of a large part of the municipality.

This flow is insufficient for the growing demand of regenerated water in other areas of Calvià, by golf courses, agricultural areas, and other public and private green areas, which will be supplied through the extensive network of regenerated water pipes that are growing as demand grows, especially in coastal areas.

This demand and future demands may be covered when the new tertiary treatment of Santa Ponça comes into operation, for which an investment of 5,539,801 million euros has been scheduled with a 14 month construction period, to begin between October and November this year.

The new tertiary will have the capacity to produce 20,160 m3/day of quality regenerated water for agricultural uses, including irrigation of golf courses, and 5,040 m3/day for all types of urban uses, including private gardens and discharge of sanitary appliances, meeting the established regulation conditions for the uses to which the water is destined.

In addition, the construction of the necessary civil works has already been planned to facilitate future extensions, so that in the near future, the Santa Ponça wastewater treatment plant will be able to treat all the incoming wastewater transforming it into regenerated water.
