Calvią at the Madrid Tourist Fair FITUR 2021

Madrid, May 19-20, 2021

CALVIÀ PRESENT AT FITUR 2021

First day: Calvià trusts that the good prospects mean a recovery of the national market for the municipality

The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, is confident that the good prospects for the national market will lead to the recovery of this tourism segment for the municipality, which in recent years has moved in percentages around 15%, since the Balearic Islands in general, and Calvià in particular, are presented as a safe tourist destination on the de-escalation route.

"Calvià works so that not only the international market, which has been the basis of the municipality's tourism, with almost 85%, re-chooses our destinations, but we also look to national tourism as an objective," said Rodríguez Badal, "So we are showing ourselves with our own product that can be seasonally adjusted and that offers experience linked to activities", such as the sports product, with events such as the ATP Mallorca Championship tournament to be held in Santa Ponça, the Magaluf Half Marathon or the Challengue Peguera-Mallorca, activities related to hiking, nature, health and rest, culture and gastronomy, or the opening to senior tourism that is expected to resume its activity at the end of summer.

For the mayor of Calvià "there is no doubt that national tourism, for which there are good prospects for connectivity, gives us the confidence that we can have a clearly de-escalated season to regain normalcy as soon as possible".

The mayor of Calvià attended FITUR accompanied by the general director of Tourism and Coastline, Xavier Pascuet.

Second day: Calvià points out the direct aid from the State and the Next Generation European Funds as outstanding lines to face the recovery

Second and last day of Calvià at FITUR in which the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, participated in the Table of Mayors of the AMT (Alliance of Tourist Municipalities), which under the title Strategies and measures to face recovery has organised the techYdestino Forum within the framework of the Madrid Tourist Fair.

To face the destinations recovery, the mayor has highlighted the importance of direct State aid of 7.000 million euros (of the 11.000 million in aid for companies and the self-employed), of which the Balearic Islands will receive 855 million, as well as the Next Generation European Funds that include 1.900 million euros for tourism sustainability plans in destinations, which will allow the presentation of highly transformative projects. "It is important that these aid arrive - he said - and that they arrive soon and well."

On the other hand, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal highlighted that given the "dramatic" drop suffered by destinations, especially Calvià with a drop of 85% in the best moment of the 2020 season, from the local "we are trying to protect the citizenship and the productive sector ”. In this sense, he explained the agreement that was reached with the entire sector and with all the political groups present in the Plenary to carry out a municipal plan for social, economic and environmental reactivation that, with a final cost of more than 10 million euros, included tax measures, direct aid and social aid. He also referred to the direct aid of 3.000 euros launched by Calvià Town Hall and which is already being granted to the productive sector. The mayor valued the work that has been done in the Balearic Islands, and the good work that the productive sector has done, by increasing efforts.

Finally, in the award ceremony of the SICTED Programme (Integral System of Tourist Quality in Destinations), the mayor of Calvià and president of the Tourism Commission of the FEMP has valued the role of municipalities for the tourism industry as key actors in the destination. "We have in our hands small treasures that we must protect socially and environmentally to offer quality, protect first to offer well-being later," he said at the event closing that he carried out together with the Secretary of State for Tourism Fernando Valdés.
