Calvią joins the 'Smoke-free beaches' programme

Wednesday 8th June 2022

Three Calvià beaches join the 'Smoke-free beaches' programme

Calvià adds the beaches of la Romana (Peguera), Es Carregador (Palmanova) and a section of Santa Ponça beach to the 'Smoke-free beaches' programme, this summer. This is an initiative promoted by the general directorate of Public Health and Participation with the close collaboration of the regional ministry of the Environment and the municipalities of the Islands, to which the Calvià Town Hall joins, in order to raise awareness on the importance of maintaining a healthy environment and minimise the generation of waste on the coastline.

Today, the mayor, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, the regional minister for the Environment, Miquel Mir, and the general director of Public Health and Participation, Maria Antònia Font, have visited the Santa Ponça beach where one of the posters has been installed. On behalf of Calvià Town Hall, the visit was attended by the councillor for the Environment, Rafel Sedano, who has carried out the preparatory work, and the councillors of the areas where the smoke-free beaches are located, Nati Francés (Santa Ponça), Francisca Muñoz (Palmanova) and Olga Granados (Peguera), as well as the representative of the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

The mayor has pointed out that this initiative is in line with the health promotion strategy of Calvià Town Hall, with the aim of moving towards a healthy municipality, so that any action that promotes the health and well-being of citizens is welcome. For his part, the councillor for the Environment, Rafel Sedano, has stressed the positive effects that these projects have, not only on health, but also on the environment and in public spaces because it avoids cigarette butts on the coast and beaches. For this reason, Calvià wanted to promote this project on the beaches of La Romana in Peguera, Es Carregador in Palmanova and in a section of Santa Ponça beach.

With this collaboration, smoke-free beaches become a space for coexistence, where responsibility and individual citizenship are appealed to generate a healthier environment for families. Likewise, from the tourist point of view, smoke-free beaches are increasingly valued as a claim for family tourism.
